Spring Hill
Spring Hill, once an unincorporated community in Gregg County, Texas, holds a fascinating history that dates back to the early 1900s. Founded before 1900, the town experienced a significant boom during the 1930s oil rush, serving as a hub for oil field camps. However, as the oil boom subsided towards the end of the decade, most oil workers departed, leaving behind a transformed landscape.
By 1940, Spring Hill had evolved into a thriving community with a population of 140, boasting a consolidated school district and a variety of businesses. Over the years, the town continued to grow and flourish, especially with the neighboring city of Longview’s development, contributing to a surge in population. By 1984, Spring Hill’s population had grown substantially to 1,458, and the community’s proximity to Longview played a significant role in this growth.
Acknowledging the seamless integration and the natural synergy with Longview, Spring Hill made a significant decision. On October 7, 1983, Spring Hill voluntarily became a part of Longview through annexation. This move brought numerous benefits, enabling residents to enjoy the perks of both a serene, close-knit community and the diverse amenities and opportunities provided by a larger city.
Despite the annexation, Spring Hill has preserved its individuality through its own school district, the Spring Hill Independent School District. This distinct educational institution has played a vital role in maintaining the community’s identity and ensuring a high-quality education for its residents.
Today, Spring Hill stands as a vibrant and thriving part of the greater Longview area, blending its rich history with a promising present. The community’s unique journey from an oil boomtown to a peaceful suburban neighborhood showcases its resilience and adaptability over the years.
